Do away with Titles & Org charts & start gaining Accountability!  

Yes, as Gino would say, my desperate plea to you, as a Business Owner, is to do away with titles & org charts & instead look at an Accountability chart? 

 

What’s the difference?  

An Org chart just has a title & a person’s name next to it – it’s really more about hierarchy, not about having people understand accountabilities.

It’s easy to understand if your title says exactly what you do, but in most entrepreneurial companies, it rarely does. 

An Accountability chart on the other hand, talks about the functions of the business & who is accountable for it. 

 

It’s built without people’s names on it because we always deal with structure first & people 2nd & the chart details the 3-5 key things that that role is accountable for. 

 

This means that anyone in the organisation can clearly see who is accountable for what. 

 

Implementing an Accountability Chart is not always easy – I could share many stories about the challenges this has created with my EOS clients in the beginning, however it always works out as it should & the difference that it makes can be phenomenal.   

 

And as this article says, “When the leadership team starts functioning like a group of capable adults, sometimes overlaps and holes start to show up. Things just ain’t working this way. Great! Now we talk about how we can fix that.

How to remember what you read  

As you know, I am an avid reader. Not just business books – my Kindle & Kobo are full of autobiographies, Trashy Novels & best Business Books. 

 

So if you’re anything like me & you read a lot, have you ever found yourself wishing you could remember that really important insight that you got from that book you read last week, last month or even last year? 

 

As this blog says, “Consuming information is not the same as acquiring knowledge. No idea could be further from the truth.”

And time is our most valuable resource so how do you make sure you don’t waste time reading things that you will later forget? 

 

“In this article, we’ll explore multiple strategies for getting more out of what you read. You don’t need to use all these strategies for every book. Using just a couple of them, whether you’re trying to learn a new philosophy or reading a work of fiction, can help you retain more and make deeper connections. 

 

What you read can give you access to untold knowledge. But how you read changes the trajectory of your life. 

 

If you only remember six things after reading this article, it should be the following truths about reading: 

 

  1. Quality matters more than quantity. If you read one book a month but fully appreciate and absorb it, you’ll be better off than someone who skims half the library without paying attention. 

  2. Speed-reading is bullshit. Getting the rough gist and absorbing the lessons are two different things. Confuse them at your peril. 

  3. Book summary services miss the point. A lot of companies charge ridiculous prices for access to vague summaries bearing only the faintest resemblance to anything in the book. Summaries can be a useful jumping-off point to explore your curiosity, but you cannot learn from them the way you can from the original text.* 

  4. Fancy apps and tools are not needed. A notebook, index cards, and a pen will do just fine. 

  5. We shouldn’t read stuff we find boring. Life is far too short. 

  6. Finishing the book is optional. You should start a lot of books and only finish a few of them.”
